New York lawmakers consider proposal to ban large SUVs from parkways

(01/31/04) YONKERS - Some state lawmakers are pushing to get over-size SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) off state parkways. State assemblyman Ivan Lafayette (D-Jackson Heights) believes large SUVs on the road are dangerous. He is proposing that any SUV weighing 6,000 pounds or more not be allowed on most major parkways in the state such as the Saw Mill and the Bronx River parkways.

Well, if SUV's aren't considered cars by the federal government when it takes into consideration fuel efficiency and emissions, then I don't why they should be treated any differently by the State government. If they are technically trucks then they ought to be under the same restrictions as trucks, it is only fair.
